RugbyU: Fiji play down Tokyo Sevens hopes

Fiji have tempered hopes they can cut the gap on runaway series leaders New Zealand at this weekend's Tokyo Sevens, despite last week's magical victory in Hong Kong. The free-running Pacific Islanders put on a Sevens masterclass when they came back from 19-0 down at half-time to beat Wales 26-19 at a packed Hong Kong Stadium on Sunday. But coach Alifereti Dere highlighted the difficulty of winning consecutive events on the Sevens World Series, which is increasingly competitive in the build-up to the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics.

Jamaicans overcome hardships to make Sevens progress

By Michael Flaherty HONG KONG (Reuters) - In the neighbourhoods where the Jamaican rugby sevens team trains, bullets fly and local gangs rule. Their fields are as thin as asphalt and there is no weight training room. Poor facilities is just one bump the organization has faced in the past few years, a larger one being the murder of Jamaica rugby stalwart Jacob Thompson in 2009.

Slim budget, yellow grass fails to stall Kenyan sevens team

By Michael Flaherty HONG KONG (Reuters) - On his first trip to Nairobi last year after being named Kenya's new rugby sevens coach, Mike Friday entered the training facility and immediately had second thoughts. "When I walked through the door, I remember thinking ‘what have I done?'" Friday recalls. The practice field was a mixture of dirt and parched, yellow grass. His few resources were a bag of cones, balls and a conditioning coach.

RugbyU: New Zealand stamp authority on Hong Kong Sevens

World Series leaders New Zealand came back from a try down for a convincing win against France as the Hong Kong Sevens kicked off Friday, while Argentina dominated title challengers South Africa. In the sixth and most high-profile tournament of the the nine-leg HSBC Sevens World Series, a packed Hong Kong Stadium watched Paul Albaladejo break away for a try to put the French on the scoreboard first. But New Zealand's Ben Lam found a gap soon after to score and though the French managed to get across the line once more, New Zealand romped home with a 33-12 victory.
