Serbia arrests eight over pharma firm embezzlement

Serbian police on Saturday arrested eight people suspected of embezzling some 12 million euros ($15 million) from the country's main pharmaceutical firm Galenika. The eight, including a former Galenika manager, are suspected of misappropriating the money through fraudulent deals while buying raw materials for medicine and through illegal sales of medicine, Serbian police head Milorad Veljovic told reporters. The arrests were carried out in Belgrade and two other Serbian towns, he added.

Turkish pianist sentenced for blasphemy to be retried

An Istanbul court on Friday accepted a request for a retrial from Turkish pianist Fazil Say who was earlier this month sentenced for blasphemy over posts on social media, the state-run Anatolia news agency reported. Car bomb 'targets Ukrainian Jewish community leader'

Ukrainian businessman and president of the All-Ukrainian Jewish Congress, Vadim Rabinovich, said Monday he had been targeted by a car bombing in central Kiev. "On Monday at around 15:36 (13:36 GMT) an attempt was made on the life of Vadim Rabinovich," the website of the All-Ukrainian Jewish Congress said. The website said that "an explosive device was thrown" into Rabinovich's moving car as it drew out from an office courtyard, causing windows to smash in nearby buildings. It was unclear whether the 59-year-old was in the car at the time.

Romanian official industrial production nudges up in 2012

Romania's industrial production edged up 0.3 percent in 2012 from output the previous year, seasonally adjusted data from the national statistics agency showed on Friday. The INS said the gain was supported by a 4.6 percent rise in energy production, while manufacturing dipped 0.2 percent. Turkey police arrest 11 over US woman's death: report

Turkish police have arrested 11 people over the death of a American woman who disappeared while visiting Istanbul last month, local media reported Sunday. The body of 33-year-old Sarai Sierra, a mother of two, was found on Saturday near Istanbul's ancient city walls with fatal head wounds, the Radikal daily reported. Turkish police had been frantically searching for Sierra after her family reported that they had lost touch with her on January 21, the day she was due to return home to New York.
