U.S. warns of fake emails claiming to be from Homeland Security

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. government on Thursday warned computer users to beware of fake emails they may receive from hackers claiming to be from the Department of Homeland Security and demanding money to reinstate use of their computer. Homeland Security's U.S. Computer Emergency Readiness Team, or US-CERT, published an alert on its website warning it had received reports of DHS-themed "ransomware."

Australian central bank computers hacked

Computer networks at the Reserve Bank of Australia have been hacked, some reportedly by Chinese-developed malware searching for sensitive information, officials said Monday. The central bank revealed the attacks after investigations by The Australian Financial Review found multiple computers had been compromised by malicious software seeking intelligence. The newspaper said in one attack a Chinese-developed malware spy programme was searching in 2011 for information on sensitive G20 negotiations, where Beijing's exchange rate and currency reserves were on the agenda.

Australia central bank targeted by hackers

SYDNEY, March 11 (Reuters) - Australia's central bank has been targeted by sophisticated hackers seeking sensitive information which included Group of 20 negotiations, but a bank spokesperson said nothing was stolen. The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) would not comment on a media report that the malware computer virus used in the attack was Chinese in origin.

Facebook network hit by 'sophisticated' attack

Facebook said Friday its computer system was "targeted in a sophisticated attack" last month, but that it found no evidence any user data was compromised. The company said in a blog post that malware came from an infected website from a mobile developer and that "we remediated all infected machines, informed law enforcement, and began a significant investigation that continues to this day."
