Ukraine detains head of state energy firm

Ukraine's interior minister said on Friday that police had detained the head of the Naftogaz state oil and gas company on suspicion of embezzling at least $4 billion (2.9 billion euros) during the rule of ousted president Viktor Yanukoych. Interior Minister Arsen Avakov said in a statement published on his Facebook account that Naftogaz chief Yevgen Bakulin is suspected of heading a "criminal group" whose members include other senior current and former Ukrainian government members. zak/dh

Ukraine puts security forces on alert over Crimea standoff

Ukraine put police and interior ministry troops on alert Thursday after armed men seized the government and parliament in the pro-Russian region of Crimea, interior minister Arsen Avakov said. "Early morning, unknown men armed with automatic and machine guns seized the building of the Crimean government in Simferopol," Avakov said in a Facebook post. KIEV (Reuters) - Ukraine's riot police force, held responsible for the deaths of most of the 100 people killed in unrest and clashes in Kiev, has been disbanded, acting Interior Minister Arsen Avakov said on Wednesday. Snipers from the 'Berkut' force - whose name means golden eagle and signifies a predator capable of swooping quickly on to its prey - are blamed for the deaths of most of the protesters in a three-day spasm of violence last week.
