Whatever his motivation, the billionaire owner of Russian Premier League side Anzhi Makhachkala Suleiman Kerimov took the decision to abandon the club's strategy of seeking a rapid rise to glory and instead drastically squeezed its budget.

Russia captain Igor Denisov was set Thursday to be the first in an expected exodus of star names from big-spending Anzhi Makhachkala. Anzhi's billionaire owner Suleiman Kerimov decided on Wednesday to drastically cut the Caspian Sea side's budget and scale down its ambitions after spending more than 200 million euros on the club's development. Kerimov's largesse saw stars such as Cameroon marksman Samuel Eto'o propel Anzhi out of the football wilderness and into third place in the Russian Premier League in the 2012-2013 season.

Queens Park Rangers defender Christopher Samba is heading back to Russian Premier League outfit Anzhi Makhachkala, reports in Britain said on Tuesday. The Sun newspaper and the Sky Sports News channel said the 29-year-old Congo international had signed for the Dagestan club for £12 million ($18 million, 14 million euros). French-born Samba rejoined QPR in January 2013 after a spell at big-spending Anzhi, who last season finished third in the Russian top flight and were beaten finalists in the Russian Cup.

Football: UEFA tell Anzhi to find new venue for Europe

Russian side Anzhi Makhachkala were asked by UEFA on Wednesday to find an alternative stadium for their Europa League home fixtures due to concerns over security in Dagestan and the North Caucasus. The European football governing body's Emergency Panel decided that due to the "security situation" in the area that "no UEFA competition match is allowed to be played in this region during the 2013/14 season".

Feb 1 (Reuters) - Brazil playmaker Willian left Shakhtar Donetsk for wealthy Russian team Anzhi Makhachkala on Friday for a fee of 35 million euros ($47.94 million), the Ukrainian club said on their website ( "FC Shakhtar and FC Anji reached an agreement regarding Willian's move to the Russian club in a transfer worth 35 million euros," Shakhtar said in a statement.
