RugbyL: Tigers off the bottom with win over Rovers

JUSTIN Carney scored a try in either half as Castleford Tigers ended a run of successive defeats with a 32-24 win over Hull Kingston Rovers to move off the bottom of the Super League. Carney, who enjoyed spells at Canberra and Sydney in the NRL, scored right on half-time to make it 12-12 and again with 14 minutes left to help Castleford build a 26-18 lead. Ryan Boyle, Michael Shenton and Jonathan Walker had all scored themselves up to that point with Jordan Tansey adding a sixth try five minutes after Carney's second to make it 32-18.

RugbyL: Manuokafoa happy to have stayed loyal to Bulls

As debut seasons in Super League go Manase Manuokafoa's at Bradford Bulls last term got off to a bad start and due to the club's financial problems gradually got worse. The 28-year-old joined from Parramatta Eels ahead of the 2012 campaign but tore the posterior cruciate ligament in his right knee before Christmas, ruling him out of the opening four rounds. Manuokafoa, who starred for Tonga in the 2008 World Cup, returned to action against Warrington in March and played every game thereafter, establishing himself as one of the best overseas signings.

RugbyL: Australian Rugby League sees $40m surplus

The Australian Rugby League Commission is counting on a record financial surplus of Aus$40 million ($41 million) this year, much of which will be invested into the sport. ARLC chief executive Dave Smith told Monday's The Australian Financial Review the forecast result would be in sharp contrast to last year when the organisation recorded a Aus$3.5 million loss. "The sport will finally have money in the bank," Smith said. "Last year we made a loss and basically the business had no assets. So it is a big change."

RugbyL: Smith impressed by rock-solid Wolves

Warrington Wolves head coach Tony Smith believed it was his side's defensive effort which proved decisive as they ran out comfortable winners against Bradford Bulls. Australian-born Smith led the Wolves to the final of the Super League last season and thanks to his team's solid defence, he looks on course for the play-offs once more after Warrington consolidated third place in the table with a 32-4 win.
