Knights coach wants more transparency in judicial decisions

MELBOURNE (Reuters) - Australia's National Rugby League needs to be more transparent about how it punishes players who cause serious injury, said Newcastle Knights coach Wayne Bennett, who lost forward Alex McKinnon to a broken neck last week. The NRL handed Melbourne Storm prop Jordan McLean a seven-week ban for his part in a three-man tackle that left 22-year-old McKinnon in hospital facing the prospect that he might never walk again.

RugbyL: Faiumu eager for Challenge Cup test

David Faiumu is happy to admit he and his Huddersfield team-mates welcome the distraction of the Challenge Cup after their disappointing start to the Super League season. The fixture schedulers could have been a bit kinder to the Giants, last year's League Leaders Shield winners, as they will face in-form St Helens in the marquee clash of the fourth round on Sunday. The Saints are unbeaten so far this season with a perfect sevens wins from seven in the league and travel to the John Smith's Stadium full of confidence.

RugbyL: Keating can be Hull KR king, says coach

Australian coach Craig Sandercock insists half-back Kris Keating is getting better with every week in Super League after Hull KR defeated Wakefield Wildcats 44-6. Keating agreed to sign for Hull KR from NRL outfit Canterbury Bulldogs back in August and was once again among the scorers as they made light work of the Wildcats. The 25-year-old touched down just before the hour mark as Hull KR ran in eight tries in total with Omari Caro, Josh Hodgson and Kris Welham all scoring doubles.

RugbyL: Widnes down Bulls for second successive win

Patrick Ah Van scored his second try of the season as Widnes hung on to defeat Bradford 22-18 and remain flying high in the Super League with a second successive win. The 26-year-old, who played for New Zealand Warriors in the NRL before moving to Europe, scored the last of Widnes' four tries against the Bulls. And it proved vital as a converted effort from fellow former NRL product Brett Kearney 13 minutes from time set up a nervy finish before the Vikings held on for a 22-18 win.
