RugbyL: Richards to quit Wigan for Wests Tigers

Former premiership-winning winger Pat Richards is leaving Wigan to return home and take up a two-year contract with the Wests Tigers in Australia's National Rugby League, the club said on Friday. Richards, 31, was a member of the inaugural 2005 Wests Tigers premiership-winning side and scored a then club season record of 20 tries before heading to Wigan later that year. The big winger was a top performer for Wigan where he has been the top points scorer in the English Super League four times and is currently the competition's leading points scorer this season.

Bradford Bulls centre Adrian Purtell admits he is lucky to be alive, let alone back playing the sport he loves and has vowed to make the most of his second opportunity. In May of last year the 28-year-old former Penrith Panther suffered a heart attack after the Bulls defeat to Leeds Rhinos at Magic Weekend. After the game the coach got as far as Huddersfield before staff realised the extent to which Purtell's health had deteriorated and the Australian was told he was suffering a heart attack and rushed to hospital.

Former Wales forward Powell to join Wigan Warriors

LONDON (Reuters) - Former Wales number eight Andy Powell will switch codes to join Wigan Warriors from rugby union team Sale Sharks, the Super League leaders said on Tuesday. The 31-year-old Powell has agreed a two-and-a-half-year contract and will leave Sale after two seasons next month. Powell won the last of his 23 Wales caps in 2012 and toured South Africa with the British and Irish Lions in 2009.

Warrington head coach Tony Smith admitted to fielding a strong team in the 74-4 Challenge Cup fourth round defeat of Keighley Cougars so that the Wolves can get back on form in the Super League. The defending champions headed to the Cougars having not strung a sequence of wins together in the Super League for four games however there was little doubt they would see off the Championship outfit.

RugbyL: Hodgson stars for rampant Wolves

Former Wests Tigers full-back Brett Hodgson racked up a personal haul of 26 points as Warrington Wolves got the defence of their Challenge Cup title off to a flying start with a comfortable fourth-round win. The Wire saw off Keighley Cougars 74-4, Ryan Atkins running in four of his side's 13 tries while Hodgson, who made over 100 appearances for the Tigers, added 11 goals and a score himself. Chris Riley and Rhys Williams both scored twice while Trent Waterhouse, Richie Myler, Gareth O'Brien and Glenn Riley also crossed for the holders in the easy win.

RugbyL: Tonga score seven tries in win over Samoa

Tonga scored seven tries in a 36-4 win over fierce Pacific rivals Samoa in a rugby league Test ahead of the World Cup in England and Wales later this year. Melbourne Storm winger Mahe Fonua, Newcastle Knights centre Siuatonga Likiliki and Sydney Roosters standoff Samisoni Langi each scored two tries with Etu Uaisele also crossing. Langi also kicked four goals to finish the Test match with 16 points.

RugbyL: Kangaroos bound away from Kiwis in Test

Australia cut loose in the final 30 minutes to overpower an under-strength New Zealand 32-12 in a trans-Tasman rugby league Test in Canberra on Friday. The Kangaroos won their sixth straight Test against the Kiwis in the countdown to October's World Cup in England and Wales. The depleted Kiwis, already without injured superstars Benji Marshall and Sonny Bill Williams and suspended forward Jeremy Smith, lost skipper Simon Mannering before kick-off with a calf strain.
