RugbyL: Rabbitohs crush Roosters in NRL season opener

Test star Greg Inglis scored a hat-trick of tries as South Sydney crushed defending champions Sydney Roosters 28-8 to open Australia's National Rugby League season on Thursday. For the second successive season the Rabbitohs drew first blood against their fierce local rivals in round one, overpowering the world club champions. The Rabbitohs, with English Test forward Sam Burgess outstanding in the collisions, scored four tries to one and dominated the second half after the score was locked at 6-6 at halftime.

RugbyL: Bailey happy he bucked Broncos for Giants

Chris Bailey cannot hide his relief that he has swapped a relegation battle with London Broncos for what he is convinced will be a Super League title challenge with Huddersfield. The 31-year-old former Manly loose forward joined the Giants, who won the League Leaders' Shield for the first time in 81 years last season, during the offseason. And, while the Giants have yet to hit top gear this season, a victory against reigning champions Wigan on the opening night is still their only win of the campaign entering round four, it is a far cry from the Broncos' plight.

RugbyL: Roosters, Rabbitohs launch NRL season in blockbuster

Sonny Bill Williams and Sam Burgess square off when champions Sydney Roosters face South Sydney in an explosive start to Australia's National Rugby League season on Thursday. Williams was a pivotal figure for the Roosters in their championship campaign last year and looms again as one of NRL's superstars in his final season in the league before a return to rugby union in New Zealand. Rabbitohs' strongman Burgess is also heading to the 15-man game with English giants Bath as he looks for a spot in England's team at next year's Rugby World Cup.

RugbyL: Smith stays calm as Warrington see off Hull

Warrington coach Tony Smith insisted he felt no nerves whatsoever as his side withstood a Hull FC fightback to claim their first points of the Super League season with an 18-16 win on Sunday. After two defeats to open up their campaign, the Wire were pushed to the limit by their visitors to the Halliwell Jones stadium despite having raced into an 18-6 half-time lead. Stefan Ratchford, former Australia international Trent Waterhouse and Ben Evans all crossed for first-half scores for the hosts, who lost to St Helens and Leeds Rhinos in rounds one and two.

RugbyL: Waterhouse gets Warrington going

Trent Waterhouse crossed for his first try of the Super League season as Warrington ended their winless start to the campaign with an 18-16 success over Hull FC on Sunday. The Wolves, Grand Finalists for the last two years, had to survive a Hull fightback at the Halliwell Jones Stadium but clung on for the victory. Stefan Ratchford crossed for the game's first try before former Australian international Waterhouse also went over as the Wire led 18-6 at the break.
