Italy centre-left leader Bersani to resign

Voting for a new Italian president headed towards a fifth round Saturday, after the political deadlock claimed another victim, with centre-left leader Pier Luigi Bersani saying he will step down. Bersani told party members late on Friday he would step down once a new president for the country had finally been elected, after his own candidate suffered a humiliating defeat. The political impasse caused by February's inconclusive general election has stoked concern about stability in the recession-hit country, the eurozone's third largest economy.

Italy in limbo after Bersani loses government bid

Italian leftist leader Pier Luigi Bersani lost his bid to form a new government on Thursday after failing to break a political deadlock, leaving the eurozone's third largest economy in limbo. The ex-Communist had been given a mandate last week by Italy's president to try and muster enough support to govern after inconclusive elections that left the country vulnerable on financial markets. After six days of intense and often bitter consultations with rival parties, Bersani reported to President Giorgio Napolitano that he had not been able to gather the backing needed to rule.

Italy centre-right says Bersani has closed door on government deal

ROME (Reuters) - There will be no scope for a deal to form a government in Italy unless centre-left leader Pier Luigi Bersani changes his negotiating position, the national secretary of Silvio Berlusconi's People of Freedom (PDL) party said on Wednesay. "The question is closed, and it is Bersani who has closed it," Angelino Alfano said in a strongly worded statement. Alfano said that after refusing the PDL's offer to join forces in a coalition government Bersani now finds himself in "blind alley."
