Football: Spain's Gombau to coach Adelaide United

Adelaide United on Tuesday announced that Spaniard Josep Gombau has agreed a two-year deal to coach the A-League club. The 36-year-old coach of Hong Kong's Kitchee, who previously worked with youth players at Barcelona, beat an impressive international field of applicants to win the head coach role at Adelaide starting in July. Adelaide United said Gombau's youth and experience were an exciting combination.

Football: Mariners all but give up overhauling Wanderers

Central Coast coach Graham Arnold said Sunday he will rest key players over the final two rounds of Australia's A-League, effectively allowing Western Sydney to finish on top of the standings as he juggles an ongoing AFC Champions League (ACL) campaign. The 1-0 home win over Brisbane Roar on Sunday ensured the Mariners would finish in the top two, guaranteeing them a week off when the post-season playoffs get underway. The Wanderers have all but sealed top spot and with two rounds to play they lead the Mariners by five points.

Football: Griffiths to quit Newcastle Jets for China

Australia's Newcastle Jets Tuesday said they had released striker Ryan Griffiths from his contract so he could take up a position with Beijing Baxi in China. Griffiths, who has played 55 games for Newcastle, had been contracted until the end of the 2013/14 domestic A-League season. "While our preference was for Ryan to stay, we understand at 32 years of age, going over to China now secures his family financially," coach Gary van Egmond said. Griffiths said it was a hard decision because he loved Newcastle.

Football: Sydney FC sign Socceroo captain Lucas Neill

Socceroos captain Lucas Neill will return to Australian football after signing with Sydney FC until the end of the domestic A-League season, the club said Saturday. "We're thrilled Lucas has joined Sydney FC," coach Frank Farina said. "He is the current Socceroo captain and one of Australia's most decorated players but more importantly he is a tremendous defender and he will make a valuable contribution in the run in to the semi-final series."

Football: Former Socceroo Culina leaves Sydney FC

Sydney FC said Monday it had mutually agreed with two-time Australian World Cup midfielder Jason Culina to terminate his playing contract, days after his reported bust-up with coach Frank Farina. Culina signed with Sydney for the remainder of the season in October and in a statement issued by the club said the circumstances surrounding his departure were unfortunate but he hoped to continue his career. "Sydney FC has this afternoon agreed to mutually terminate the contract of Jason Culina," the club's chief executive Tony Pignata said.

Football: Perth Glory sack coach

Australian club Perth Glory on Monday sacked coach Ian Ferguson after eight successive A-League games without a win, with former player Alistair Edwards taking over until the end of the season. "Chairman Tony Sage has confirmed Ian Ferguson will no longer be coach by mutual consent," the club said on its Twitter site. "Former Perth Glory players Alistair Edwards (coach) and Gareth Naven (assistant) will take the reins until the end of the season," it added.
