Bad loans at Spanish banks climbed to a new record high in September, official data showed Monday, despite a 41-billion-euro European-financed bailout of the financial sector. Tears at deadly Spain crash site

A steady stream of people, many with tears in their eyes, flocked Saturday to the site of Spain's deadliest train crash in decades and stared in silence at the wreckage. "We thought everything had been cleaned up and we just saw that the first carriage is still there," said Celia Rosende as she pointed to the locomotive still lying on the rails, its windshield smashed, at the crash site just outside Santiago de Compostela. "It gives you the shivers to think of everything that people experienced here that terrible night."

Spain bus crash kills nine

A bus overturned and trapped people inside in a crash near the central Spanish city of Avila on Monday, killing at least nine passengers and seriously injuring another five, emergency services said. "We confirm nine dead, five seriously injured and more than 10 slightly injured in the bus crash," said an emergency services spokesman for the region of Castile and Leon. elc-gr/djw/gd
