RugbyU: Cheetahs reach Super 15 play-offs for first time

Central Cheetahs of South Africa overcame an early hiccup to defeat Auckland Blues of New Zealand 34-13 Saturday and reach the Super 15 play-offs for the first time. After fly-half Riaan Smit put the Bloemfontein-based franchise ahead after two minutes with the first of five successful penalty kicks, the Blues hit back through a clever try from scrum-half Jamison Gibson-Park. Fly-half Baden Kerr converted to give the Blues a four-point advantage before a 12,000 Free State Stadium crowd in a match the visitors had to win to keep alive their own play-off hopes.

Central Cheetahs won four consecutive Super Rugby matches for only the second time when they defeated Australian visitors Melbourne Rebels 34-16 Saturday. The Bloemfontein franchise went into the break 10-6 ahead after wasting several try scoring chances at a wet Free State Stadium in this central city, but ran in four second half tries for a bonus-point triumph. Victory lifted Cheetahs five places to fifth on the combined standings in the southern hemisphere championship while the troubled Rebels stayed third last after five consecutive losses.
