Three Senegal women freed after rebel kidnapping

BISSAU (Reuters) - Three Senegalese women who work for a South African organization that cleared land mines and were kidnapped by separatist rebels in Senegal this month were handed over to authorities in neighbouring Guinea-Bissau on Wednesday. Twelve employees of demining firm Mechem were kidnapped by a faction of the Movement of Democratic Forces of Casamance, which has waged a 31-year struggle for independence in Senegal's southern border with Guinea-Bissau.

Gunmen kidnap 12 mine clearance workers in southern Senegal

DAKAR (Reuters) - Gunmen suspected of belonging to a Senegalese separatist movement abducted 12 employees of a South African mine clearance company in the West African nation's restive Casamance region, military and civilian officials said on Sunday. The workers, all Senegalese, were on their way to inspect a mine field that had been cleared of explosives when they were kidnapped on Friday by men believed to belong to the Movement of Democratic Forces of Casamance (MFDC).

Twelve bomb disposal experts abducted in Senegal

Suspected separatist rebels have abducted 12 bomb disposal experts in southern Senegal, a security source said Saturday. The source said the "armed band" was suspected of belonging to the Casamance Movement of Democratic Forces (MFDC), which has been fighting for independence of southern Senegal for some three decades. A source close to the government's mine-clearing agency said the 12 were abducted Friday in the village of Kailou, about 15 kilometres (nine miles) from the region's main city Ziguinchor. The hostages include women, the source said.

A landmine explosion killed a woman and a child Saturday in Senegal's restive Casamance region, the scene of a long-running separatist rebellion, a local resident and a security source said. "A mine exploded when a cart drove over it. A woman was killed on the spot. A child had his feet blown off and was taken to hospital, where he died," a villager told AFP.

At least five killed in bank attack in Senegal's Casamance

Suspected separatist rebels in Senegal's Casamance region killed three people including a Frenchman in an attack on a bank, and two of the assailants were killed in a subsequent clash with Senegalese troops, the army said Saturday. The attackers, suspected to be members of the Casamance Movement for Democratic Forces (MDFC), raided the Credit Mutuel bank and nearby shops in the town of Kafountine on Friday night, killing at least three civilians including a French national, the army said.
