New earthquake in Chile prompts tsunami alerts

By Anthony Esposito and Rosalba O'Brien SANTIAGO (Reuters) - A powerful 7.6-magnitude earthquake struck off northern Chile late on Wednesday, prompting tsunami alerts and evacuations along the coast and in neighboring Peru. It was the strongest of several aftershocks that followed a huge 8.2-magnitude quake blamed for six deaths in the region on Tuesday.

Strong 7.8 magnitude quake hits off northern Chile: USGS

(Reuters) - A strong 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck off northern Chile late on Wednesday, the U.S. Geological Survey said. The quake, the largest of a series of aftershocks following a powerful and deadly 8.2 magnitude quake that hit a day earlier, was located 12 miles south of the port of Iquique at a relatively shallow depth of 12.4 miles, the USGS said. It was earlier reported as a 7.4 magnitude quake.

Powerful 7.8 earthquake rocks northern Chile

A powerful earthquake measuring 7.8 rocked northern Chile late Wednesday, the day after a deadly 8.2 jolt in the same region, authorities said. A tsunami warning was issued and thousands of people were ordered to evacuate inland from coastal areas, according to authorities who had first measured the quake at 7.4. The new temblor struck at 2343 local (0143 GMT), 20 km (14 miles) south of the city of Iquique, the navy's alert service said. "Based on its strength a tsunami warning has been issued," the nationaloceanographic agency, known as CHOA, added.

Chileans return to homes after huge quake kills six

Thousands of Chileans returned to their homes on Wednesday after spending the night on the hills following a powerful 8.2-magnitude earthquake that killed six people and sparked tsunami alerts. The huge quake in the north of the major mining country sent copper prices jumping to a three-week high after Tuesday night's tremors caused nearly one million people to evacuate their homes along the coast. Some 300 inmates escaped after the wall of a women's prison collapsed in Iquique, the city closest to the quake's epicenter.

Deadly earthquakes and tsunamis in Latin America

A 8.2-magnitude earthquake hit Chile late Tuesday, killing at least six people and generating tsunami waves that might ripple as far as Indonesia. Powerful quake hits Chile, tsunami warning

A powerful 8.0-magnitude earthquake hit off Chile's Pacific coast on Tuesday, sparking a tsunami warning for Chile, Peru and Ecuador, US officials said. The quake struck at 846 pm local time (2346 GMT) at a depth of 10 kilometers (six miles), 83 kilometers from Iquique on Chile's northern coast, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) said. The Hawaii-based Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued a warning. Chilean authorities also issued a tsunami alert after the quake, which they registered at 7.9.

Did microbes cause mass extinction?

Volcanoes and asteroids are sometimes blamed for wiping out nearly all life on Earth 252 million years ago, but US research Monday suggested a more small-time criminal: microbes. These microbes, known as Methanosarcina, bloomed in the ocean on a massive and sudden scale, spewing methane into the atmosphere and causing dramatic changes in the chemistry of the oceans and the Earth's climate, according to the new theory put forth by scientists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and colleagues in China.

Yellowstone National Park rattled by largest earthquake in 34 years

By Laura Zuckerman (Reuters) - Yellowstone National Park, which sits atop one of the world's largest super-volcanoes, was struck on Sunday by a magnitude 4.8 earthquake, the biggest recorded there since February 1980, but no damage or injuries were immediately reported. The tremor, a relatively light event by seismic standards, struck the northwest corner of the park and capped a flurry of smaller quakes at Yellowstone since Thursday, geologists at the University of Utah Seismograph Stations said in a statement.

Another earthquake rattles southern California following 5.1 quake

By Victoria Cavaliere (Reuters) - Residents of southern California were rattled by a 4.1 magnitude earthquake Saturday afternoon, the largest of more than 100 aftershocks following Friday's 5.1 rumbler that caused light scattered damage around the Los Angeles area. Saturday's quake rippled through an area near Rowland Heights, California, about 2:32 p.m., according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The temblor was considered relatively shallow with a depth of 5.6 miles, the USGS said.

Los Angeles quake causes little damage, much nervousness

Washington, Mar 29 (EFE).- A magnitude-5.1 earthquake centered southeast of downtown Los Angeles left little in the way of damage but made many people nervous because of the approximately 40 aftershocks. The U.S. Geological Survey said the largest temblor struck at 9:09 p.m. Friday, with its epicenter between the towns of La Habra and Brea in Orange County and at a depth of 7.5 kilometers (4 3/4 miles). The USGS continues recording the quake's aftershocks, which had reached 38 by the time of its last report.
