Snooker: Fu, Ding continue Asian surge at world champs

Hong Kong cuesman Marco Fu completed a wonderful 24 hours for Asian snooker on Wednesday as he became the third player from the continent to reach the second round of the world championships. Fu, 35 and a semi-finalist at the championships in 2006, maintained his overnight supremacy over veteran Welshman Matthew Stevens and made the second round with a 10-7 win.

Snooker: Thai rookie leads Asian charge at worlds

Thailand's rank outsider Dechawat Poomjaeng was on Tuesday on the verge of a famous win in the first round of the snooker World Championship. The 24-year-old - ranked 70th in the world - led Scotsman Stephen Maguire 9-8 in the best-of-19-frame match. It was a much better performance against last year's semi-finalist from the engaging Thai than the crowd might have expected after an inauspicious start. He had got the entrance to the players arena wrong and then walked to the wrong table before the first session on Monday.

Snooker: Carter shatters Fu's German title bid

England's Ali Carter came from 5-3 down to beat Hong Kong's Marco Fu 9-6 to win his third world-ranking title at the German Masters on Sunday. Carter dominated the evening session in the German capital to take the 60,000-euro top prize and add to the titles he won at the 2009 Welsh Open and 2010 Shanghai Masters. Hong Kong's 35-year-old Fu looked the stronger player in the early stages but struggled with his safety and potting at the business end. Fu had been seeking his second ranking title having won the 2007 Masters.

Snooker: New dad Fu reaches first final since 2008

Hong Kong's Marco Fu reached his first major final since 2008 on Saturday and credited his run at the German Masters to becoming a father for the first time. The 35-year-old Fu defeated England's Barry Hawkins 6-4 to set up a final meeting with Ali Carter who beat Australia's former world champion Neil Robertson 6-2 in his semi-final. Fu's wife Shirley gave birth to their first baby, a girl called Alicia, on December 22 in London.
