At least 12 people died and around 15 were missing Friday after a boat capsized in the Ariri river in the Brazilian Amazon, firefighters said in a revised toll, as an investigation got under way. "Twelve bodies, including those of children, have now been recovered," Colonel Carlos Alberto Moreira Reis told AFP by telephone. "The boat had more than 70 people aboard -- 41 of them were found alive, including nine who were hospitalized," he said. Earlier in the day, he gave a toll of four dead and 25 unaccounted for.

Two dead, scores missing after ferry sinks in Bangladesh

Two people were confirmed dead and scores more were missing after a boat carrying around 100 passengers sank following a collision on a river in Bangladesh Friday, the latest in a series of disasters blamed on lax safety standards. The small vessel was ferrying passengers on the Meghna river, close to the town of Gazaria in the central Munshiganj district, at around 8:00 am (0200 GMT) when it collided with a barge laden with sand to be used for construction.

Yachting: Spanish sailor Sanso awaits rescue after capsize

Spanish sailor Javier Sanso capsized on Sunday and was waiting to be rescued as he sees his bid to finish the Vendee Globe threatened, some 500 nautical miles west of Madeira, Portugal, race organisers announced on Sunday. "At 11h49 French time (10h49 GMT), two distress beacons were triggered and a rescue helicopter has been sent," read a statement on the Vendee Globe website. Sanso was reported to be on a lifeboat and signalling for help as well as setting off smoke flares as he awaits help.
