Cycling: Westra wins first stage of Tour of California

Dutchman Lieuwe Westra seized the yellow jersey at the Tour of California after winning the 165 kilometre (130 mile) opening stage on the outskirts of San Diego on Sunday. Westra (Vacansoleil-DCM) outduelled Spaniard Francisco Mancebo in a sprint over the final kilometres while Slovak Peter Sagan led the chase bunch, finishing six seconds back. Cannondale's Sagan had to overcome a rear derailleur problem with just five kilometres to go.

Cycling: Ireland's Martin wins Tour of Catalonia

Daniel Martin claimed victory in the Tour of Catalonia on Sunday with the Irish rider's lead never seriously threatened on the seventh and final stage in Barcelona. Thomas De Gendt (Vacansoleil-DCM) was the winner of the 122km ride from El Vendrell into the Catalan capital as he pipped David Lopez Garcia (Sky) and Michelle Scarponi (Lampre-Merida) on the line. However, it was Martin, riding for Garmin Sharp, who took the overall victory as he shadowed second-placed Joaquim Rodriguez to the line to ensure his 17 second lead wasn't eroded, with Scarponi finishing third.

Cycling: Hoogerland in hospital after car collision

Dutch rider Johnny Hoogerland was injured when he was hit by a car on Sunday while training for the Tour of the Mediterranean, his Vacansoleil-DCM team said. The 29-year-old was hit when the car turned into him on a slight downhill section of the road. "He was taken to the hospital of Villajoyosa where they diagnosed some rib fractures and some injuries that require an extra examination on Monday," said a team statement. "More information on the condition of the rider will follow on Monday." dj
