Football: Barton given suspended ban for Silva jibes

English midfielder Joey Barton was handed a suspended two-game ban by the National Ethics Commission (CNE) on Monday in relation to a string of insults he directed at Paris Saint-Germain's Thiago Silva last month. French football's ethics committee had previously said it was unable to rule on Barton's comments because they had been made in English and not French. Barton had taken to his @Joey7Barton account to launch a tirade against Silva in which he called the Brazil centre-back a "pussy" and "a overweight ladyboy".

Football: Pay cut central to Marseille stay - Barton

Joey Barton says he would be prepared to take a pay cut to extend his stay with Marseille next season, suggesting only Paris Saint-Germain could afford his current wages in France. "I want to stay here," Barton said after Marseille's 2-1 victory over Bastia on Saturday, a result that means PSG will have to wait until at least next weekend before clinching their first Ligue 1 title in 19 years. "I've spoken with them. But the problem is I'm contracted with a football club in England which pays me an awful amount of money," said Barton.

Soccer-Barton hits out at 'cheats' after first Ligue 1 dismissal

PARIS, Feb 3 (Reuters) - English midfielder Joey Barton said he had been the victim of "cheats" after being sent off for the first time since joining Olympique Marseille during a defeat to struggling Nancy on Sunday. The controversial Barton has been on his best behaviour since he made his Ligue 1 debut last November after serving out a 12-match ban for violent conduct in QPR's final Premier League match of last season against Manchester City.
