Cycling: Prosecutor to appeal blood bag destruction

The public prosecutor in the Operation Puerto case in which Spanish doctor Eufemiano Fuentes was sentenced to a year in prison has signalled its intention to appeal his sentence and the destruction of more than 200 blood bags seized from his apartments. Fuentes was found guilty of endangering public health along with one of his co-accused Jose Ignacio Labarta, who was given a four-month sentence, in performing blood extractions and transfusions on a number of high profile cyclists.

Cycling: Contador not to testify at Puerto trial

Former Tour de France winner Alberto Contador will not testify at the "Operacion Puerto" trial in defence of Manolo Sainz, his former manager at the Liberty Seguros cycling team, the defendant's lawyer confirmed on Tuesday. Sainz is on trial along with four others, including the principal accused Eufemiano Fuentes, for endangering public health by sanctioning blood transfusions. "Looking at how the process is developing, I will not call Alberto Contador as a witness," Ignacio Arroyo told reporters.

On the first day of testimony from professional riders before the judge in Madrid, Jaksche's evidence could have a bearing on whether the court decides that Fuentes, who denies doping, and his four fellow defendants violated public health laws.
