China says it saw drops in coal mining accidents and deaths in 2013 as safety improves

BEIJING, China - Safety at China's coal mines improved in 2013, with the numbers of accidents and deaths decreasing from the previous year, the government said Saturday. China has the world's deadliest coal mines, and authorities have made it a priority to improve safety by enforcing rules. The central government said there were 589 mining accidents last year, leaving 1,049 people dead or missing. It did not give prior-year figures, but said the numbers declined by more than 24 per cent.

Number of road traffic deaths in Seoul drops 15 pct

SEOUL, Dec. 24 (Yonhap) -- The number of deaths caused by traffic accidents in Seoul fell nearly 15 percent on-year in the July-November period thanks to facility improvements, data showed Tuesday. According to the data compiled by the Seoul Metropolitan Government, a total of 156 people were killed by traffic accidents in the capital city in the five-month period, down 14.8 percent from 183 cases a year earlier. A city official attributed the decline to the completion of traffic facility improvements.

China mine explosion kills 21

An explosion on Friday killed 21 workers at a coal mine in China's western Xinjiang province, reports said. The blast occurred at the Baiyanggou coal mine at 1:26am (1756 GMT Thursday), the Xinhua news agency reported, citing the local regional emergency response office. According to the report, 34 miners were working underground at the time of the explosion. Twelve workers managed to escape but 22 were trapped by the blast. Only one of the trapped miners survived the explosion.

Spain's worst mining accident in 18 years leaves 6 dead

Five other miners were injured, including one who was airlifted to a hospital in Leon city, where he is listed in serious condition. The gas leak at the Pozo Emilio del Valle mine in Pola de Gordon was Spain's deadliest mining accident since 1995. The mine is operated by financially troubled Hullera Vasco-Leonesa, which blamed the deaths and injuries on a "sudden" escape of flammable gas.

Italy mourns 38 killed in coach crash
