Cricket: England thrash South Africa to reach final

Hosts England cruised into the Champions Trophy final with a seven-wicket win on Wednesday after South Africa once again underlined their reputation as cricket's 'chokers'. Alastair's Cook men outplayed the Proteas after electing to bowl on an overcast day at the Oval where England had lost to the West Indies in the final of the same event in 2004. South Africa were reduced to 80-8 by the 23rd over before a record ninth-wicket partnership of 95 between David Miller and Rory Kleinveldt gave the total some respectability.

Cricket: India bowl out Pakistan for 165

India put on a dazzling display in the field to bowl out Pakistan for 165 in 39.4 overs in a rain-hit Champions Trophy group B match on Saturday. Four bowlers claimed two wickets each and the last two batsmen were run out after India sent Pakistan in to bat in front of flag-waving supporters from both sides who packed the Edgbaston stands. The match drew a full house even though it held only academic interest since India had already qualified for the semi-finals and Pakistan are out of the race after losing both their previous games.

At the age of 15 years and 212 days, Matthew Fisher will become the youngest post-war cricketer to play in one of England's county competitions if he features in the game in the northeastern town of Scarborough. "I could never imagine at the start of the season that I would be named in the first-team squad," he told the website of British newspaper The Sun on Friday.

Cricket: Injured England duo a worry for Cook

England captain Alastair Cook said the absence of seamers Stuart Broad and Steven Finn was "more than precautionary" after New Zealand's five-wicket win in the first one-day international at Lord's. Before play started Friday both Broad (knee) and Finn (shin) were ruled out of the opening two fixtures in this three-match series, placing a doubt over their fitness for next month's Champions Trophy one-day tournament in the UK. "They are key parts of our full-strength one-day team and they are world-class bowlers," Cook told reporters.
