Swimming: Magnussen sets new PB in 50m win at world trials

James Magnussen clocked a new personal best time to reclaim his men's 50-metres freestyle national title and the sprint double at the Australia Swimming Championships in Adelaide on Thursday. The Olympic silver medallist, who successfully defended his national 100m freestyle crown earlier this week, will now have the opportunity to swim in both events at the world championships in Barcelona in July. Magnussen, 22, was clear of the field at halfway and hit the wall in 21.52sec, a time that would have won him the silver medal in the event at the London Olympics last year.

Swimming: Campbells' sister act wins world team berths

Australian sisters Cate and Bronte Campbell finished first and second in the women's 100-metres freestyle final in Adelaide on Wednesday to qualify for this year's world swimming championships. Cate, an Olympic gold medallist in the women's 4x100m relay, swam the quickest time ever in Australia in Tuesday's semi-final and produced a start-to-finish victory in the final, touching in 52.92secs. Bronte Campbell (53.85) held off challenges for the second individual berth in the event at the world championships in July.

Reigning world champion James Magnussen said Wednesday he was working hard on being humble and no longer trying to be the "alpha male" of the Australian swimming team. The London Games silver medallist, who produced the year's fastest time to win the men's 100-metres freestyle at Australia's world championship trials on Tuesday, has had a torrid time since the Olympics last year. He was among six Australian swimmers who were fined and handed deferred suspensions last month after admitting taking banned sleeping pills and playing pranks at a pre-London Olympics training camp.

Swim: Magnussen's fast time to win 100m at Aussie trials

Reigning world champion James Magnussen produced the year's fastest time to win the men's 100-metres freestyle at Australia's world championship trials in Adelaide on Tuesday. The London Olympic silver medallist, 22, led in the early stages and after turning in 22.80sec powered home to win in 47.53sec, the same time in which he won silver at last year's Olympics. Magnussen finished clear of Cameron McEvoy (48.07), who swam a personal best and will swim in the 100m and 200m freestyle events at the Barcelona world titles in July.

Swimming: Irvine clocks fastest 200m butterfly of the year

Australian Grant Irvine clocked the fastest 200m butterfly time in the world this year at the national world championship trials in Adelaide on Monday. Irvine, 22, shaved more than one second off his personal best time, coming home in 1:55.32 to book his place in the Australian team for the Barcelona world titles in July. His time was the second fastest ever by an Australian. He came home well ahead of London Olympian Chris Wright (1:57.79), whose time left him just outside the benchmark for selection.

Swimming: Fraser-Holmes wins 200m freestyle

Thomas Fraser-Holmes overcame the disappointment of disqualification from the 400m freestyle heats to win his third straight 200m title at the Australian world championship trials Sunday. Fraser-Holmes, 21, who was automatically disqualified when he broke the start in his 400m heat on Friday, reeled in Cameron McEvoy to win the 200m freestyle and book his place on the world championships team to compete in Barcelona.
