Cycling: Bookwalter wins first stage in Qatar

US racer Brent Bookwalter of the BMC team won Sunday's opening stage of the Tour of Qatar, seeing off Swiss rivals Martin Elmiger (IAM) and Gregory Rast (RadioShack) in a sprint finish in tricky, windy conditions. The 28-year-old from Albuquerque edged home for his first professional win after a 145km ride from Katara to Dukhan Beach which saw the riders dogged by Shamal, a strong northerly wind which provided an additional challenge.

Cycling: Cavendish takes Qatar third stage

British sprint king Mark Cavendish won the third stage of the Tour of Qatar on Tuesday, claiming the contested finish on the 143-kilometre stage between Al Wakra and Mesaieed. The 2011 world road race champion fended off competition from Dutchman Markus Barry and Lithuania's Addis Kruopis for his second victory since joining Omega Pharma-Quick Step from Team Sky in the close-season. American Brent Bookwalter, winner of the race's opening stage, preserved his overall six-second lead ahead of compatriot Taylor Phinney.
