Spanish teachers stage general strike

Madrid, May 9 (EFE).- The State Platform for Public Schools on Thursday labeled the general strike staged at all levels of the educational system in Spain "a total success," while officials said a low number of educators and students took part. The group organized the strike to protest the reforms being finalized by Education Minister Jose Ignacio Wert.

Operations at India's public-sector banks and many factories were hit for a second straight day by a general strike called to protest against the government's pro-market reforms. The Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry (ASSOCHAM), a prominent business group, estimated losses from the two-day stoppage at 260 billion rupees ($4.8 billion). Eleven unions called the walkout in protest against the measures which they condemned as "anti-poor" and said were likely to cost jobs and raise prices.

Eleven unions called the strike in protest at the measures which they condemn as "anti-poor" and likely to cost jobs and raise prices. While the impact of the stoppage was patchy and felt mainly in heavily unionised state institutions, analysts said it underscored discontent among workers.

Greek seamen extend strike

Greek maritime workers are extending a strike that has disrupted ferry services between the mainland and the country's numerous islands, their union said on Tuesday. "We have decided to continue with another 48-hour strike for every category of vessel," the Panhellenic Seamen's Union (PNO) said in a statement. The PNO, which is protesting against a labour reform permitting ferry owners to limit the number of crew members, is on its sixth continuous day of a strike that began Thursday.
