Federer to play Monte Carlo

Paris, Apr 9 (EFE).- Swiss tennis star Roger Federer has decided to kick off his French Open preparations early this year, accepting a wild-card invitation to play next week's clay-court event in Monte Carlo, tournament organizers said Wednesday. The world No. 4 has not played the Monte Carlo Masters since 2011 and had not initially signed up for this year's tournament, which is the only one of the nine ATP World Tour Masters 1000 events that players can skip without ranking ramifications.

Tennis: Federer serves up hot starter

Beating Benjamin Becker, the German once ranked in the a top 40, 6-1, 6-4, was some way from suggesting these might return, but Federer did look pleasingly upbeat and confident as he dispatched a competent middle-range opponent in only 62 minutes.
