Formula One: Massa on top as Ferrari take early control

Ferrari dominated Friday morning's opening free practice for this weekend's Bahrain Grand Prix, with Brazilian Felipe Massa topping the times ahead of team-mate Fernando Alonso of Spain. In typically hot conditions, with a track temperature of 41 degrees Celsius (105.8 degrees Fahrenheit) and an air temperature of 34C at the Sakhir circuit, the Ferrari duo took command in the final half hour of the 90-minute session.

The British driver, who has switched from McLaren to Mercedes for the coming season, clocked 1min 23.282sec, to finish ahead of his erstwhile team-mate Jenson Button, who timed 1:23.633 in his McLaren. Jean-Eric Vergne of France, in a Toro Rosso, was third in 1:24.071.

Formula One: Brake failure sends Hamilton crashing out

Lewis Hamilton suffered a brake failure on his first day behind the wheel of his Mercedes on Wednesday, but insisted he had survived more horrifying smashes. The 28-year-old 2008 world champion, was on his 15th lap when he careered off the Jerez track and into a tyre barrier having just moments earlier reached speeds of between 260kph and 300kph. "I hit the brakes and in a split-second they didn't work. The pedal went down and nothing happened, so I just braced for the impact," said Hamilton, after the accident which took place on the second day of pre-season testing.
