UEFA: Europa League winners to earn Champions League berth

London, May 24 (EFE).- UEFA, European soccer's governing body, announced Friday that the winner of the 2014-15 Europa League - and ensuing editions of that club tournament - will earn an automatic berth in the more prestigious Champions League competition. Until now, only the winners of Europe's 52 league competitions - and in the case of the bigger soccer powerhouses, one or more runners-up - qualified for the Champions League. The winner of the Champions League title also earned an automatic berth in the next season's tournament.

Turkish football club Fenerbahce drew Portuguese side Benfica in the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) Europa League semifinals.The draw took place at UEFA headquarters in the Swiss city of Nyon on Friday. Fenerbahce faces Benfica in the semifinals, with the opening leg played in Turkey, and European champion Chelsea will play Basel, with the first-leg match in Switzerland. Basel and Fenerbahce have reached their first semifinal in any European club competition.

UEFA recommends referees halt matches in case of racism

SOFIA (Reuters) - UEFA has recommended that referees stop matches when there are incidents of racism and says it will "fully support" them if they follow its advice. In a resolution issued in conjunction with the European Clubs Association (ECA) and the world players' union FIFPro, European soccer's governing body reminded referees that they had been authorisied four years ago to stop matches in case of serious racism incidents from the stands or on the pitch.

Soccer-Clubs in favour of separate Champions, Europa Leagues

Feb 5 (Reuters) - European clubs are in favour of keeping the Champions League and Europa League as separate competitions, the association which represents them said on Tuesday. The European Clubs' Association (ECA), whose members include around 200 clubs from across the region, said that 92 percent of those questioned in a survey said they wanted the two competitions to continue to exist in parallel.
