Partial stadium closure for CSKA over Toure abuse

By Brian Homewood BERNE (Reuters) - CSKA Moscow must close part of their stadium for their next Champions League home game following the racist abuse hurled at Manchester City's Yaya Toure by the Russian club's fans last week, UEFA said on Wednesday. UEFA also said that their venue director for CSKA's Arena Khimka has been "relieved of his duties" for failing to stop play and issue a warning over the public address system as laid down in UEFA guidelines. The referee was absolved of any blame.

Football: Laudrup to return to Spain as Swans face Valencia

Premier League Swansea City were drawn alongside Spanish outfit Valencia in arguably the most intriguing match-up to come out of Friday's draw for the group stage of the Europa League. Swansea will also come up against Russian club Kuban Krasnodar, who beat Feyenoord in the play-offs and whose squad includes France striker Djibril Cisse, as well as Swiss side St Gallen in Group A. But it is the meeting with Valencia that will most excite the fans of the Welsh club, who won the English League Cup last season.

Football: Big names fall by wayside in Europa League

Several clubs hoping to figure prominently in this season's Europa League will not even feature in Friday's group-stage draw after suffering shock play-off round defeats on Thursday. Heading the list of victims on Thursday were Italian side Udinese, who failed to overturn a 3-1 first-leg deficit against Slovan Liberec, drawing 1-1 in the Czech Republic, despite fielding a strong team, to bow out of Europe before the end of August.

Football: Lucky loser set for Europa League berth

UEFA announced on Thursday that all losing teams from the Europa League play-offs will enter a draw on Friday morning to decide who replaces Fenerbahce in the competition's group stage. The Court of Arbitration for Sport on Wednesday upheld a two-year ban from European competition imposed on Turkish giants Fenerbahce by UEFA for match-fixing violations. They were allowed to play in the Champions League qualifiers while they appealed the ban, and beat Salzburg in the third qualifying round before losing 5-0 on aggregate to Arsenal in the play-offs.

Football: CAS uphold Malaga's European competition ban

Spanish side Malaga will not be able to play in the Europa League next season after the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) upheld UEFA's one-year European ban, the tribunal announced on Tuesday. The Andalusians were hit with the suspension in December last year over an infringement of UEFA's financial fair play regulations due to outstanding payments that had not been made to other clubs and Spanish tax authorities. Malaga took their appeal to the Lausanne-based CAS but lost.
