MLB Team Report - St. Louis Cardinals - INSIDE PITCH The Cardinals, 9-2 winners over Cincinnati on Friday, have suffered some attrition to their starting pitching, what with four starters on the disabled list. But, one of them, right-hander Jake Westbrook, is about to come off after testing his ailing right elbow. Right-hander Chris Carpenter, who scarcely has pitched in the last two seasons, seems to be improved in his constant battle with a nerve condition that has affected his right shoulder.

Wainwright almost matches Miller, blanks Rockies

Wainwright almost matches Miller, blanks Rockies ST. LOUIS -- After allowing 11 hits and five runs a week ago in a no-decision at Milwaukee, Adam Wainwright went back to the basics Saturday. "Throw strike one, avoid the free passes and put the hitters away," Wainwright said. By doing so, he came within five outs of treating a sellout crowd to the first no-hitter at Busch Stadium III.

Baseball: Cards' ace Carpenter likely out for season

Former Cy Young award-winner Chris Carpenter will likely miss the 2013 baseball season, with his career in jeopardy from the nerve-related injury that sidelined him much of last year. St. Louis Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak said Tuesday he doesn't expect Carpenter to pitch for the team in the coming season, calling it "very unlikely" as the 37-year-old continues to experience discomfort from last year's medical issues.
