Vast Mayan city discovered in southeast Mexico jungle

Mexico City, Jun 19 (EFE).- Archaeologists have discovered a previously unknown Mayan city in the southeastern state of Campeche, which for its vast extension and characteristics is believed to have been a seat of government some 1,400 years ago, Mexico's National Institute of Anthropology and History, or INAH, said. A team of experts headed by Slovenian archaeologist Ivan Sprajc has christened the site Chactun.

Mexican politicians: going to the dogs, er, cats?

Xalapa resident Sergio Chamorro, who adopted the cat in August, said the plan began as a joke between friends borne out of their frustration with the Veracruz state government over freedom of speech.

Moderate earthquake rocks Mexico

Mexico City, Jun 16 (EFE).- A magnitude-5.8 earthquake rocked southern Mexico early Sunday, but no injuries or serious damage have been reported, the National Seismology Service said. The temblor's epicenter was located 30 kilometers (18.6 miles) southeast of Huitzuco, a city in the southern state of Guerrero. The earthquake occurred around 12:19 a.m., with the magnitude initially revised upward to 5.9 and 6.0 but later set at 5.8, the service said.

Mexican reserve El Pinacate nominated as World Heritage Site

Mexico City, Jun 15 (EFE).- The Mexican government has obtained the inclusion of El Pinacate Biosphere Reserve and Great Desert of Altar on the tentative list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites, the Environment and Natural Resources Secretariat said. "The process has taken more than eight years. In the year 2004 the Mexican government began taking the necessary steps to get El Pinacate Biosphere Reserve and Great Desert of Altar included on the list of tentative sites," the department said in a statement.

Gunmen kidnap mayoral candidate in Mexico

Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, Jun 12 (EFE).- The Institutional Revolutionary Party, or PRI, candidate for mayor of Guadalupe y Calvo, a city in the northern Mexican state of Chihuahua, was apparently kidnapped by gunmen, officials said. Jaime Orozco Madrigal has been missing since Monday night, the Chihuahua Attorney General's Office said. "While no reports have been filed over his disappearance, there is evidence that confirms a report that the candidate was deprived of his freedom by an armed group," the AG's office said in a statement.

Missing youths were taken from Mexico City bar, attorney says

Mexico City, Jun 6 (EFE).- The 12 young people who have been missing since late last month in Mexico City were taken from the bar where they had met up in the Zona Rosa tourist district, attorney Ricardo Martinez told Efe Thursday. The investigators' file "contains information that shows they were inside (the Heaven bar) and were, in fact, taken from there," Martinez, who represents the families of the missing youths, said.

Number of Chinese visitors to Mexico rises 35 pct

Mexico City, Jun 4 (EFE).- Chinese tourist arrivals to Mexico grew 35.1 percent in the first quarter of 2013 over they same period last year, the Tourism Secretariat said Tuesday. From January to April, "Mexico received 19,635 tourists coming from China," the secretariat said in a communique. The favorite destinations of Chinese visitors are Mexico City, Cancun, Tijuana, Guadalajara, Los Cabos, Monterrey and Puerto Vallarta.

Bodies of 3 missing activists found in Mexico

Mexico City, Jun 4 (EFE).- The bodies of three of the eight community activists reported missing last week in the southern Mexican state of Guerrero have been found, state officials said. The activists disappeared after participating in a protest staged last Thursday by Unidad Popular, or UP, to demand fertilizer and public works projects in their communities, press reports said. The missing activists were involved in an altercation with Federal Police officers and were not heard from after the protest, UP representatives said.

Archaeologists discover 8 ancient sites in Mexico

Mexico City, May 28 (EFE).- Archaeologists discovered eight temporary camps in the Sierra del Mayor mountains, in the Mexican state of Baja California, that date from 400 to 7,000 years ago, the National Anthropology and History Institute, or INAH, said. In the camps associated with the Cocopah culture were found hundreds of animal bones, some from extinct species, ceramics, stoneware, and places where iron oxide was mined to make pigment for murals and body painting.

Mudslide kills 7 in Mexico

Mexico City, May 27 (EFE).- Seven people were killed and four others injured when a mudslide buried part of the highway linking this capital with the central city of Queretaro, 213 kilometers (132 miles) to the northwest, Mexico's transportation secretary said Monday. Heavy rain and hail Sunday night sent a wave of mud and rocks down the side of a mountain near Tepeji del Rio in Hidalgo state, Gerardo Ruiz Esparza said on Twitter. Efforts to clear the highway are in progress, the secretary said.
