U.S. Navy seizes N. Korea-flagged tanker near Cyprus

The U.S. Defense Department said Monday its Navy has seized a North Korea-flagged oil tanker in waters near Cyprus which recently left a Libyan port under the control of antigovernment militias. North Korea disowned the ship, saying last week the tanker's North Korean registry has been deleted and Pyongyang has nothing to do with its operation.

S. Korea to decide on aerial refueling tankers in 2014

SEOUL, Nov. 27 (Yonhap) -- South Korea plans to move forward with the purchase of four aerial refueling tankers in 2014, which can greatly enhance the operational capabilities of its Air Force, the government said Wednesday. The Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) said in a report to Defense Minister Kim Kwan-jin that it has carefully reviewed the need to procure the tanker aircraft and decided to move forward with the process.

In a report to the parliament, the Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) said it has allocated a 6.9 billion won (US$6.5 million) budget for deposit and will hold a meeting in November to officially approve the plan.

Four missing after tanker hits sailboat in Netherlands

Four people were missing Monday after a gas tanker ploughed into a sailboat on a canal in the southern Netherlands, emergency services said. Several dive teams, helicopters, ambulances and fire engines were scrambled to the scene of the accident near Wemeldinge, around 20 kilometres (12 miles) from the Belgian border. "Dive teams are in and around the boat looking for those missing. There may be four people in the water," emergency services in the Zeeland region said in a tweet. The sailboat sank was hit earlier by a tanker, emergency services said in another tweet.

S. Korean fighter jets make nonstop flight to Alaska for drills

South Korean F-15K combat jets have flown nonstop to Alaska, using in-flight refueling to take part in an upcoming U.S.-led multinational exercise known as "Red Flag," South Korea's Defense Ministry said Friday. The flight to Alaska "has become the first time for our fighter aircraft to fly non-stop by aerial refueling to participate in a joint drill overseas," spokesman Wi Yong Seop told a news briefing.

Airbus Military's MRTTA330 and Boeing's KC-46 are considered as potential candidates for the acquisition, the source said, asking for anonymity as the plan has not been confirmed yet. The Defense Acquisition Program Administration will approve the plan in a meeting presided over by Defense Minister Kim Kwan-jin, which is slated for Aug. 12.
