Islam allows marriage by choice: Hadi

Head of Madrassa Arif-ul-Hussaini, Maulana Allama Syed Muhammad Jawad Hadi, in a statement issued to the press, highlighted the importance of marriage and criticized forced marriages as not allowed in Islam. Maulana Hadi said, “Islam lays special emphasis on marriage and the relationship between husband and wife”. Islam recognizes the importance of companionship and promotes marriage as being the foundation of families.

US cardinal defends Catholic stance on gay marriage

A leading US cardinal defended Catholic opposition to gay marriage during an Easter Sunday interview, saying that sometimes the church by its nature must be “out of touch.” The interview came days after the US Supreme Court held oral arguments on the question of same-sex marriage, which is legal in nine states but not recognized nationally because of a 1996 federal law defining marriage as between a man and a woman. “Sometimes by nature, the Church has gotta be out of touch with concerns, because we’re always supposed to be thinking of the beyond, the eternal, the changeless,”

Fewer S.Africans getting married: study

Fewer South Africans are getting married, with the number of registered unions dropping by nearly ten percent between 2003 and 2010, a study showed on Wednesday. "The number of civil and customary marriages registered every year declined by eight percent," the South African Institute of Race Relations (SAIRR) a survey found despite a 12 percent population growth over the same seven years. Customary marriages took the largest plunge, dropping 42 percent compared to civil marriages that declined by four percent.
