2 immigration men fired for escape of Reyes brothers

The Bureau of Immigration (BI) has dismissed from service two of its employees allegedly involved in the escape of former Palawan Governor Joel Reyes and brother Coron, Palawan Mayor Mario Reyes.In separate decisions, Immigration Commissioner Ricardo David ordered the dismissal of Rogelio Udarbe Jr., Administrative Aide III and Wesley Gutierrez, Security Guard I.Based on the decision, Udarbe is liable for grave misconduct and conduct prejudicial to the best interest of the service while Gutierrez was found liable for grave misconduct, gross neglect of duty, and conduct prejud

Philippines orders probe into witness death

The Philippines justice minister on Monday ordered government investigators to look into the mysterious prison death of a key witness in the murder of a prominent environmentalist. Justice Secretary Leila de Lima gave the order after an autopsy indicated that the witness, Dennis Aranas, did not commit suicide as jail officials had said, but may have been murdered. "I ordered the NBI (the official National Bureau of Investigation) to probe it," she said in an SMS message to reporters, referring to a special investigating body of the justice department.

Witness death in Philippine case raises alarm

A witness in the murder of a prominent Philippine environmentalist has died in prison under mysterious circumstances, police said Wednesday, as his relatives raised fears of foul play. Relatives alerted police Tuesday about the death of the witness, Dennis Aranas, who was detained at a jail in Lucena, capital of Quezon province, said Chief Inspector Job de Mesa.
