Portugal, without even playing, moved into third spot of the FIFA rankings released on Thursday, as Argentina slipped to sixth. It means Europe now occupies the top three places in the rankings, with Portugal sitting behind leaders Spain and Germany. They are followed by four South American sides in Colombia (4th, up 1), Uruguay (5th, up 1), and arch-rivals Argentina (down 3) and Brazil (up 3), who share sixth position.

S. Korea in pot three with Asian, American qualifiers for FIFA World Cup

SEOUL, Dec. 4 (Yonhap) -- South Korea has ended up in a pot with other Asian and American qualifiers for the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil. In the northern Brazilian resort of Costa do Sauipe, about 70 kilometers north of Salvador, FIFA on Tuesday unveiled its four pots for the quadrennial event set to open next summer. South Korea is in the third pot with Australia, Japan and Iran from Asia, and the United States, Mexico, Costa Rica and Honduras from North and Central America. The draw will take place Friday, also in Costa do Sauipe.

Football: Asia, Oceania bid to merge World Cup slots

Asia and Oceania are in talks to share their World Cup qualifying slots to give teams more chance of reaching football's biggest stage, Asia's soccer chief said. Shaikh Salman bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa, president of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), said a proposal would be drawn up and submitted to world body FIFA for approval. The news comes after Jordan and New Zealand lost intercontinental World Cup play-offs against Uruguay and Mexico respectively, with both teams shipping five goals in the first leg.

Football: China refuse to blame referee after Cup stumble

China refused to blame the referee after they were denied a late penalty against Saudi Arabia which could have sent them to the 2015 Asian Cup. Captain Zheng Zhi sidestepped a question over the controversial decision after Zhang Linpeng went down heavily in the box in the dying seconds. China finished the game at 0-0, denying them an 11th consecutive Asian Cup spot and forcing them into an anxious wait ahead of their final qualifier away against Iraq.
