New Japan volcanic islet here to stay, for now

A new island created by a volcanic eruption off Japan's coast is here to stay -- for now at least, scientists said Tuesday, adding the new landmass could withstand erosion for several years. Lava that was dramatically vented when an undersea volcano began erupting last month cooled and solidified above the surface of the sea, creating a small island 1,000 kilometres (600 miles) south of Tokyo. At the time, Japan's coastguard said it was too early to mark a new entry on the national map because it could soon disappear.

Environmentalists fear change in status could endanger Mexican park

Mexico City, Dec 2 (EFE).- Nevado de Toluca, the fourth highest mountain in Mexico, has a new status that has sparked concern among the area's residents and environmental groups who fear the new measure will open the door to exploitation by commercial and touristic interests. By presidential decree, the 4,680-meter (15,344-foot) volcano, located southwest of the capital of Mexico state, has gone from being a "national park" to become "a protected area for flora and fauna."

18,000 Indonesians flee erupting volcano

Almost 18,000 people have now fled their homes as a volcano violently erupts in western Indonesia, an official said, as it spewed more red-hot gas and rocks Monday. Authorities at the weekend issued the highest safety alert for Mount Sinabung on the island of Sumatra after it erupted spectacularly, urging everyone in a five-kilometre (3.1-mile) radius of the volcano to evacuate. On Monday, Sinabung erupted six times more, spewing columns of ash as high as 2,000 metres (6,500 feet), national disaster agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said.

New Japan islet created in volcano eruption

A dramatic volcanic eruption in the Pacific Ocean has created a tiny new islet in Japan's territorial waters, officials said Thursday, the first time in decades the nation has seen the phenomenon. The navy spotted smoke about 1,000 kilometres (600 miles) south of Tokyo on Wednesday and Japan's coastguard later verified the birth of the islet around the Ogasawara island chain. Video footage showed plumes of smoke and ash billowing from the 200-metre island, and Japan's coastguard said it was warning vessels to use caution in the area until the eruption cools off.

Japan hopes new land near Nishinoshima to expand territorial waters

Japan hopes new land created by a recent undersea volcanic eruption in the Pacific will grow into an islet, thus expanding the country's territorial waters, Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga said Thursday.

EasyJet, Airbus team create world's first man-made ash cloud

LONDON (Reuters) - The world's first man-made ash cloud has been created by a team led by airline easyJet and planemaker Airbus to test how passenger aircraft cope with volcanic blasts such as the 2010 Icelandic eruption. The eruption of Iceland's Eyjafjallajokull volcano shut down much of Europe's airspace for six days, affecting more than 10 million people and costing $1.7 billion.

More than 5,000 flee erupting Indonesian volcano

More than 5,000 people have fled their homes in western Indonesia in recent days following a series of violent volcanic eruptions, an official said Tuesday. Mount Sinabung on the north of Sumatra island has been hurling out red-hot ash, rocks and torrents of glowing lava up to seven kilometres (four miles) into the air since the start of the month. Villagers from nearby Karo district are being evacuated as the volcano, which erupted in September for the first time since 2010, continues to spew ash and rocks.

Guatemala warns pilots of ash plume from volcano

Guatemalan authorities cautioned pilots Monday that increased activity in the country's Fuego volcano had dispersed ash into the atmosphere. The column of volcanic ash has risen 4,500 meters (914,700 feet) above sea level in a southwesterly direction, Guatemala's disaster response agency said. The volcano, which is located in southwestern Guatemala, is "presenting changes in the pattern of eruptions with an increase in the number of moderate and strong explosions," it said.

Italy's Mount Etna volcano erupts

ROME (Reuters) - Europe's tallest and most active volcano Mount Etna erupted on Saturday, spewing glowing lava into the air and sending a vast plume of smoke over the southern Italian island of Sicily. The eruption did not require any mountain villages to be evacuated or cause significant disruption, though airspace over Sicily was briefly closed on Saturday morning, according to Catania airport.
