Thieves rob armored car at University of Houston

HOUSTON (Reuters) - Thieves robbed an armored car on the University of Houston campus on Friday, escaping with an undisclosed amount of money, federal investigators said. No one was injured in the heist, in which an armored car guard fired one shot in defense, FBI Special Agent Shauna Dunlap said. The robbers left the armored car in a parking lot near the Student Center, where the robbery occurred. The campus remained open during and after the robbery, university spokesperson Shawn Lindsey said.

17 Arrested for Spain's biggest jewelry heist

Madrid, Oct 17 (EFE).- Seventeen people were arrested as suspects in the biggest jewelry heist in Spain's history, the December 2012 theft in Madrid of wristwatches valued at more than 23 million euros ($31.4 million), police said Thursday. Among those arrested is a known thief, Ismael A.V., alias "The Troll," who is considered to be the architect of the heist. The thieves gained access in December 2012 to the Diarsa company, where they robbed two safes, making off with more than 1,700 watches of prestigious Swiss brands.

France arrests on-the-run 'Pink Panther' gang member

French police have arrested a suspected member of the infamous Pink Panther gang of international jewel thieves who had been on the run since escaping from a Swiss prison in May. A police source said Wednesday that the 47-year-old, born in Montenegro but with French and Macedonian citizenships, was detained at his home in the southern Montpellier region on Monday. The source said the suspect failed to escape out a window during his arrest.

French police have arrested a suspected member of the infamous Pink Panther gang of international jewel thieves who had been on the run since escaping from a Swiss prison in May. Police and judicial sources said Wednesday that the 47-year-old, born in Montenegro but with French and Macedonian citizenships, was detained at his home in the southern town of Bedarrides, about 15 kilometres (10 miles) north of Avignon, on Monday. A police source said the suspect failed to escape out a window during his arrest.

Thieves blast into Brink's Netherlands depot: media

Thieves used explosives to blast their way into a depot of the security firm Brink's in the Netherlands late Wednesday, local media reported, with the value of their haul unknown. No employees of Brink's, which transports cash and valuables, were injured in the heist which happened around 11:00 pm (2200 GMT) at the US-based firm's building in Best, southern Netherlands, the Dutch ANP agency said citing police. A helicopter joined 20 police cars at the scene of the crime when the alert was sounded, but the perpetrators had fled, local radio reported.

'Die Hard' director faces jail within weeks: report

"Die Hard" director John McTiernan has until April 3 to surrender himself to serve a prison term handed down for lying to FBI agents, according to the Hollywood Reporter on Monday. McTiernan, whose films also include "The Hunt for Red October" and "The Thomas Crown Affair," was sentenced to 12 months in jail and fined $100,000 in 2010 for making false statements to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).

Australian casino hit by 'Ocean's Eleven' scam

Australia's largest casino has alerted police to a betting scam in which a high-roller reportedly netted Aus$32 million (US$33 million) in an "Ocean's Eleven" style heist. Melbourne's Herald-Sun newspaper Friday said a foreigner staying at the Crown Casino was involved in the sting which it believes accessed the venue's own surveillance cameras, which are constantly trained on players and croupiers.
