Salafists clash with police in Tunis suburb

Clashes broke out between radical Islamists and police on Sunday in a Tunis suburb where Salafist movement Ansar al-Sharia told supporters to meet for their banned annual congress, an AFP journalist reported. Tunis, Feb 7 (Reuters) - France will close its schools in the Tunisian capital Tunis on Friday and Saturday over fears of violent protests against the Wednesday killing of opposition leader Chokri Belaid, the French embassy said. "French schools in Tunisia will be exceptionally closed on Friday 8 and Saturday 9 February 2013," the embassy said in a statement on its website on Thursday. A Tunisian policeman was killed on Wednesday in clashes between the security forces and protesters that erupted in the capital after the assassination of an opposition leader, the interior ministry said. "Policeman Lotfi Alzaar, 46, died on Wednesday afternoon... after sustaining a chest injury caused by rocks thrown during an operation to disperse a group of protesters in Bab El-Jazira" in central Tunis, the ministry said.
