NBA: Gasol diagnosed with vertigo after dizzy spell

Los Angeles Lakers star center Pau Gasol was diagnosed with vertigo on Monday, a day after leaving an NBA victory over Orlando at halftime due to dizziness and nausea. The 33-year-old Spanish 7-footer (2.13m), the Lakers' top scorer and rebounder, was listed as doubtful by the club for Tuesday's home game against New York but he will be re-examined on Tuesday morning. That encounter will mark the first meeting between the Lakers and New York since former Lakers coach Phil Jackson took over as president of basketball operations for the Knicks earlier this month.

Gasol stays put with Lakers as trade deadline passes

Los Angeles, Feb 21 (EFE).- Spain's Pau Gasol will remain a member of the Los Angeles Lakers through the remainder of the 2013-2014 season after the team did not find a good enough deal for the center before the NBA's trade deadline. But the 33-year-old's remaining time with the rebuilding team, which is far out of playoff contention with a record of 18-36, could still be short-lived because he becomes a free agent on July 1.

Now the Spaniard is applying the same lessons he has learnt on the basketball court to the high-stakes world of Olympic diplomacy in his role as an official spokesman for Madrid's bid to host the 2020 Summer Games.

Gasol flew back to Los Angeles, where he was examined on Thursday by team doctors and a foot specialist who diagnosed him with a torn plantar fascia -- the tissue under the arch of the foot. "Gasol is expected to be out a minimum of 6-8 weeks," Lakers spokesman John Black said in a statement.
