Football: PSG on brink of title glory

There are still four games of the Ligue 1 season remaining but Paris Saint-Germain could wrap up their first title since 1994 if results go their way this weekend. After starting the campaign as overwhelming title favourites, the capital club have been permanent fixtures in top spot since late January and came into May nine points clear of second-placed Marseille at the summit. It is therefore only a matter of time before they become the sixth different name on the trophy in the last six seasons.

Football: Stunning Sochaux comeback dents Lille's Euro hopes

Relegation threatened Sochaux scored three times in an eight-minute spell at the death to salvage a 3-3 draw at Lille on Friday and hamper their hosts' hopes of qualifying for the Champions League. Cruising at 3-0 up with 11 minutes left through a Salomon Kalou brace and one from Montenegrin Marko Basa, Lille looked set to leapfrog Lyon into third place and a Champions League qualifying position. But an incredible eight-minute blast from Sochaux, who nevertheless remain third from bottom and in the drop zone, blew a hole in Lille's Euro hopes.

Football: Saint-Etienne reluctant to get off their cloud

After the euphoria of winning their first major trophy in 32 years, Saint-Etienne are now on the brink of a maiden qualification for the Champions League as they travel to arch rivals Lyon on Sunday for a derby crunch encounter. The 'Green Devils,' who almost became the first French club to win the European Cup in 1976 when they were beaten 1-0 by a Bayern Munich side that featured Franz Beckenbauer, Karl-Heinze Rummenigge and Gerd Muller, are two points behind third-placed Lyon with five matches to play.

Football: PSG face uncertain future after double blow

Paris Saint-Germain may be moving towards their first Ligue 1 crown since 1994, but their exit from two cup competitions and rumours of a management shake-up have put a cloud over the club. Defeat to Barcelona in the Champions League quarter-finals was followed on Wednesday by a shock French Cup quarter-final elimination at the hands of modest Evian on penalties. On top of that, star signing David Beckham ran into a barrage of criticism for his sloppy defensive play that led to Evian's equaliser.
