Guinea, which holds long-awaited parliamentary elections on Saturday, is a country rich in natural resources but where the population is mired in poverty.

- GEOGRAPHY: Bordering the northern Atlantic Ocean in tropical west Africa, Guinea covers 245,900 square kilometres (98,000 square miles). Its neighbours are Sierra Leone to the south and Guinea Bissau to the north, and it shares borders with Liberia, Ivory Coast, Mali and Senegal.
