Football: Bengoechea named new Peru coach

Pablo Bengoechea was named Peru national coach on Tuesday on a short-term contract after the experienced Argentinian Marcelo Bielsa declined the Peruvian Football Federation's offer. The 49-year-old Uruguayan,- a stylish midfielder capped 43 times who scored in both their Copa America wins in 1987 and 1995, signed a contract that runs until December but is likely to be extended to the Copa America in Chile next year.

Markarian resigns as Peru coach after World Cup failure

(Reuters) - Sergio Markarian has turned down an offer to stay on as Peru coach after they failed to qualify for next year's World Cup in Brazil. "We recognize that things didn't work out, we are responsible for that and we are more disappointed than anyone else," the Uruguayan told the Canal N cable news channel. "I said all along that if we didn't qualify, we couldn't continue and that's what happened. They offered us the chance to carry on and we said we would keep our word, we couldn't continue having not qualified."

S. Korea plays Peru to scoreless draw in football friendly

SUWON, South Korea, Aug. 14 (Yonhap) -- South Korea played Peru to a scoreless draw in their friendly football match on Wednesday. At Suwon World Cup Stadium, about 45 kilometers south of Seoul, the South Koreans controlled most of the match but had nothing to show for their efforts. Peru entered the contest ranked 22nd in the FIFA rankings, while South Korea was at 56th.

Peru to bring top guns to football friendly against S. Korea

SEOUL, Aug. 9 (Yonhap) -- Bayern Munich striker Claudio Pizarro and Schalke 04 winger Jefferson Farfan will headline the 20-man roster for Peru in an upcoming football friendly match against South Korea, officials said Friday. The Korea Football Association (KFA) released Peru's lineup to the local press on Friday. South Korea will host the South Americans at 8 p.m. Wednesday at Suwon World Cup Stadium, about 45 kilometers south of Seoul.

Barcelona and Bayern Munich completed the Champions League semi-finals line-up on Wednesday. Barcelona went through on the away goals rule after a 1-1 draw against Paris Saint-Germain in their quarter-final second leg tie.
