Pan-Muslim body urges generous aid for Mali

The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) on Monday urged its member states to make generous contributions at this week's donors conference on Mali to be held in Brussels. Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, OIC Secretary General, launched the appeal at the opening of a ministerial meeting in the Saudi Red Sea city of Jeddah. Romano Prodi, the UN special envoy for the Sahel, attended the meeting which was held to discuss logistic and financial assistance to Mali, an OIC member, ahead of Wednesday's main donors meet.

Pan-Muslim body urges release of captive Syria bishops

The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation urged on Saturday an "unconditional" release of two bishops kidnapped this week in Syria. OIC secretary general Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu condemned the kidnapping on Monday of Aleppo's Greek Orthodox Bishop Boulos Yaziji and Syriac Orthodox Bishop Yohanna Ibrahim by armed men as they were en route to the northern city from the Turkish border. He called in a statement for their "immediate and unconditional release because such act contradicts the principles of true Islam, and the (high) status held for Christian clergymen in Islam."

Saudi, Gulf states, OIC condemn Boston bombings

Saudi Arabia, the Gulf Cooperation Council and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation all condemned on Tuesday the twin bombings at the Boston Marathon, calling them an act of terrorism. Three people were killed and more than 170 wounded in the bombings in the worst attack in the United States since the September 11, 2001 atrocities. King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia sent a message of condolences to the American people, saying he was "saddened by the news of the two explosions in Boston," state news agency SPA reported.

Pan-Muslim body urges Myanmar to allow OIC delegation

The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation Sunday urged authorities in Myanmar to allow a ministerial delegation to visit the country to discuss deadly violence against Muslims. The world's top Islamic body, in a statement following a meeting in the Saudi Red Sea city of Jeddah, also urged the UN Human Rights Commission to dispatch a fact-finding mission to Myanmar. The statement called on "Burmese authorities to strongly respond to the organisation's appeal and allow a ministerial OIC delegation to visit" Myanmar.

OIC urge Myanmar to probe death of 13 young Muslim boys

The Secretary General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu expressed his deep sorrow over the death of 13 boys at an Islamic school in Yangon, Myanmar, last Tuesday.Ihsanoglu , in a press statement, said such tragic circumstances must be avoided.He urged the authorities in Myanmar to launch a full investigation into the causes of the fire in order to prevent recurrence of the tragedy.

Britain's Charles meets pan-Muslim body chief

Britain's Prince Charles met the head of the world's largest Islamic grouping in the Red Sea city of Jeddah on Sunday, the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation said in a statement. OIC Secretary General Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu briefed Prince Charles "on the various intra-OIC programmes and activities in support of agricultural development, food security and drought resilience," it said. Prince Charles and his wife Camilla embarked on a regional tour last week, beginning in Jordan.

Egypt's Morsi hopes for Syria ceasefire 'soon'

Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi said on Thursday he hoped for a ceasefire "soon" in Syria, where tens of thousands of people have been killed in nearly two years of conflict. Morsi said a meeting between Egypt, Turkey and Iran on the sidelines of a Cairo summit of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), discussed "the general framework" to resolve the crisis in Syria.
