NEW YORK, N.Y. - The growing number of non-profit news websites say they need more help from business experts than journalists. AOL ad revenues jump, but stock falls on profit worries

(Reuters) - Online media group AOL Inc on Wednesday reported first-quarter revenue grew on strength in its advertising business, but shares tumbled on concerns that profits were still mostly coming from a shrinking dial-up platform. "The core issue with this company is can they make content profitable?" said Ben Schachter, an analyst with Macquarie Research. "What you see every quarter is the only thing making money is the membership group. They are clearly going in the right direction but we want to see more progress."

BERLIN - The Huffington Post is expanding further with a German language edition, putting new pressure on media companies in Europe's largest economy as they struggle with newspaper closures and try to introduce online pay walls. President Barack Obama poked fun at himself, his political opponents, the news media and even his wife's hairstyle late Saturday at the annual White House Correspondents' Dinner. The dinner, where around 3,000 guests dine in a massive hotel ballroom, is greeted with near hysteria in Washington, normally a strait-laced town where celebrity is calculated in degrees of political power rather than box office pulling power.

Reddit apologizes for Boston bombing 'witch hunts'

Reddit on Monday apologized for being a rallying point for online witch hunts as amateur sleuths used the social news website to expose the people behind the bombing at the Boston Marathon. "Though started with noble intentions, some of the activity on Reddit fueled online witch hunts and dangerous speculation which spiraled into very negative consequences for innocent parties," Reddit general manager Erik Martin said in a blog post. "We all need to look at what happened and make sure that in the future we do everything we can to help, and not hinder, crisis situations."

"It's no secret that the news industry is in the midst of a massive change. Within the world of neighborhood news there's an exciting pace of innovation yet increasing challenges to building a profitable business," it said.
