Embattled Bulgaria PM sorry for 'mistake'

Bulgaria's embattled new prime minister apologised Wednesday for the "mistake" that has sparked five straight days of protests and plunged the EU's poorest country into fresh political turmoil. In a bid to ease the crisis, Plamen Oresharski, in office for three weeks, also rushed through parliament a package of measures aimed at easing poverty and repairing battered trust in democracy. "I made a political mistake and I apologise not only to you but to all the people who came out to protest," Oresharski told parliament, again however rejecting calls to step down.

In the country's largest protests in 20 years, more than 200,000 people marched across the country to vent their anger at government's lavish spending in demonstrations initially triggered by a hike in bus fares.

27 Injured, 8 arrested in protests at start of Confederations Cup

Brasilia, Jun 15 (EFE).- At least 27 people were injured and another eight were arrested during protests Saturday in Brasilia at the inauguration of soccer's Confederations Cup, police sources said. Taking part in the demonstration, called by social movements criticizing what they considered the disproportionate outlay of taxpayers' money to organize the FIFA tourney, were some 1,200 protesters who at first expressed their disapproval peacefully.

Police use tear gas on protesters in Istanbul, Ankara

Police forces used tear gas and water cannon early on Wednesday to disperse hundreds of protesters in Istanbul and the capital Ankara on the sixth day of nationwide anti-government unrest, media reported. Demonstrators were trying to march on Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan's offices in both cities and defied warnings to disperse, according to media images and an AFP reporter. Clashes also took place in the southeastern city of Hatay on the border with Syria, where a 22-year-old protester died a day earlier after being wounded during a protest.

Cambodian police break up Nike factory protest

Cambodian riot police on Monday broke up a protest by several thousand workers at a factory making clothes for US sportswear giant Nike and arrested eight people, labour activists said. Unionists accused the security forces of using excessive force and intimidation to quell the demo -- the latest in a series of outbreaks of worker unrest at factories producing goods for western brands.

Togo protesters dispersed with teargas in Lome

Security agents in Togo on Thursday used teargas to disperse opposition members who had gathered for a demonstration in the capital despite a ban on protests, an AFP reporter saw. The demonstrations had been called by "Let's Save Togo", a coalition of opposition and civil society groups, to protest against the death in detention of an opposition member and to demand the release of others held in connection with fires at two markets in January. The market blazes caused millions of dollars in damage and led to the arrest of several opponents of President Faure Gnassingbe.

Police charge rioters at Spain crisis demo

Police baton-charged young protestors who hurled bottles and stones at them in Madrid Thursday in the latest street demonstrations sparked by anger at Spain's economic crisis. Emergency services said 29 people were injured when unrest broke out at the demonstration near the parliament in central Madrid by protestors calling for the government and lawmakers to quit. The demonstration coincided with the release of Spain's latest official unemployment figures which showed the jobless rate had surged past 27 percent, with 6.2 million people out of work.
