Big growth is likely in store for Georgia's film industry, with plans of major studio projects

ATLANTA - A few years ago, Georgia was locked in a bidding war with North Carolina over the Disney movie, "The Last Song," starring Miley Cyrus. Both states wanted the movie to film in their state, and North Carolina was close to sealing the deal with an attractive tax incentive package. But Georgia snapped up the production, largely because it had recently expanded its own tax credit for films.

Masters underground economy enjoying upswing

Washington Road is the Masters bazaar, an unappealing four-lane corridor of strip malls, gas stations, fast food joints and budget hotels that runs straight past the picturesque Magnolia Lane, the short road leading to the Augusta National clubhouse.

Zombie television show turns Georgia town into tourism hub

Frank Hollberg III, whose family has sold furniture in Senoia, Georgia since 1894, laughed as he recalled the odd sight of watching a man walk through the idyllic downtown holding a head in his hand. The head was a prop and the man an actor filming "The Walking Dead," the hit zombie-themed television series that has drawn millions of fans worldwide and helped turn the small town 25 miles south of Atlanta into a thriving tourist attraction. Senoia, pronounced "Seh-noy" by its 3,300 residents, had seen its fortunes fade after the local cotton and agricultural industries died off.

Golf: First Masters arrives for Augusta's women members

For all the attention golfing greats will command next week at the 77th Masters, it will be two 58-year-old American women in green jackets who will make history at Augusta National Golf Club. Former US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and South Carolina financier Darla Moore were unveiled last August as the first women members admitted to the formerly all-men's club in Augusta National's 80-year history.

Power plant blast reported in U.S. state of Georgia

An explosion was reported on Thursday at a coal-fired power plant in the U.S. state of Georgia, APA reports quoting US media.The blast took place at Plant Bowen in Euharlee, which was located in Bartow County, some 50 miles northwest of Atlanta. According to a report by the local WSBTV, the Bartow County Sheriff's Office is asking residents to avoid the plant, and roads in the area are closed.According to a separate report by ALIVE 11, another local TV station, the explosion occurred at the main power house, and injuries have been reported.

Atlanta ranked as best U.S. city to find love online

NEW YORK, Feb 7 (Reuters) - Singles looking to find love online might want to head to Atlanta, which was ranked on Thursday as the best U.S. city to connect on the web, while Laredo, in Texas, was considered the worst. The southern metropolis scored best in the ranking compiled by Men's Health magazine, which looked at the number of members of six popular online dating sites in each city and the percentage of households using online dating services.
