Haiti ex-dictator 'Baby Doc' ill after hearing: source

Former Haitian dictator Jean-Claude Duvalier fell ill after a court hearing last week and may miss the next hearing in a probe into allegations of torture and graft, a supporter said Monday. A source close to "Baby Doc" Duvalier told AFP that last Thursday's court hearing had been a "bruising encounter" for the 61-year-old former strongman, and that he had been admitted to hospital for tests shortly afterwards.

Haiti judge demands Duvalier be brought to court

A Haitian judge demanded Thursday that former dictator Jean-Claude "Baby Doc" Duvalier be brought to court next week to attend a hearing into whether to try him for crimes against humanity. Judge Jean-Joseph Lebrun issued the order in the presence of lawyers acting for Duvalier and for the alleged victims of his regime, after the former leader failed for a third time to attend a scheduled hearing in the case.

UN rights chief urges justice for Haiti dictator's victims

Haiti must offer justice for the victims of abuses committed under the dictatorship of Jean-Claude Duvalier, better known as "Baby Doc", the UN's human rights chief said Thursday. As Haiti's court of appeal resumed hearings over the strongman's 15-year rule, UN high commissioner for human rights Navi Pillay said there was a duty to ensure that abuses do not go unpunished. "Such systematic violations of rights must not remain unaddressed," Pillay said in a statement.

Ex-Haiti dictator 'Baby Doc' Duvalier due in court

Two years after his return to Haiti following 25 years in exile, ex-dictator Jean-Claude Duvalier is due in court Thursday as a judge mulls whether he can be tried for crimes against humanity. Known as "Baby Doc," Duvalier was the world's youngest head of state when, at the age of just 19, he succeeded his late autocratic father Francois "Papa Doc" in 1971. His rule was initially seen as more benign, before he too adopted hardline dictatorial measures. He was eventually overthrown in 1986 and spent a quarter of a century in exile in France.

New court date set for Haitian ex-dictator Duvalier

A Haitian judge postponed a hearing for former dictator Jean-Claude Duvalier, wanted for corruption, misappropriation and embezzlement, after he failed to show up in court on Thursday. The appeals court judge rescheduled the hearing for February 21, accepting a request from Duvalier's attorneys because the original date coincided with the 27th anniversary of his ouster, and they worried about violence in the streets. Duvalier's lawyers and victims of his regime sparred in court.

Former Haitian dictator Jean-Claude Duvalier, wanted for corruption, misappropriation and embezzlement, failed to show up in court as scheduled on Thursday. A crowd of about a hundred supporters and critics meanwhile took the streets in downtown Port-au-Prince. Duvalier, former president for life of the impoverished Caribbean nation, was kicked out of power on February 7, 1986 after nearly 30 years of dictatorship inherited from his father, the late "Papa Doc" Francois Duvalier.
