Jewish body to meet in Hungary despite anti-Semitism

Accused of presiding over growing anti-Semitism, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban is unlikely to receive a standing ovation on Sunday when he addresses a World Jewish Congress meeting in Budapest. "The number of anti-Semitic or anti-Roma statements increased dramatically in recent years, and some of them have come from senior members of the prime minister's party or his government," WJC head Ronald Lauder said in a hard-hitting recent newspaper opinion piece.

Record turnout at Budapest Holocaust march amid rising racism

A record 10,000 Hungarians took part here Sunday in an annual march to commemorate the victims of the Holocaust, amid rising racism and anti-Semitism in the country in recent months. Over 10,000 people, more than double the usual turnout, participated in the "March for Life", according to an AFP count, alongside government and opposition members, and the ambassadors of Israel and the United States. "It's important that future generations also learn the lessons from the Holocaust," organiser Laszlo Bandi told the crowd at the start of the event in downtown Budapest.

In 'solidarity', World Jewish Congress to meet in Hungary

The World Jewish Congress will hold its 2013 annual assembly in Budapest to show solidarity with Hungary's Jews who are facing "exceptionally strong" anti-Semitism, organisers said Tuesday. "This will be the first time in a very long time that the WJC will hold its congress outside Jerusalem," said Peter Feldmajer, president of the Federation of Hungarian Jewish Communities (Mazsihisz), one of Hungary's leading Jewish groups.

Hungary Jewish group urges ban on Hitler-ally street names

Hungary's main Jewish organisation called Wednesday for a ban on the naming of public spaces after the country's wartime leader Miklos Horthy, an ally of Adolf Hitler who oversaw the deportation of Jews. The call by the Federation of Hungarian Jewish Communities (Mazsihisz) followed the decision on Tuesday by the mayor of Kunhegyes, a small town in eastern Hungary, to rename a street after Horthy.
