Finland's Mikko Hirvonen, driving a Ford Fiesta, snatched the lead on the Rally of Portugal's opening day while world champion Sebastien Ogier was relegated to third place.
Hirvonen ended the day with a 3.7sec lead over fellow Fiesta driver Ott Tanak of Estonia with Ogier, in a Volkswagen, standing at 6.5sec off the lead.
"The tyres moved about a lot in the final stage, but it's fantastic to be ahead," said Hirvonen. "We're in a good fight but Ogier won't be happy with the situation, so I'm sure he'll attack tomorrow."
