Mexico rescues 11 child laborers

Mexican authorities rescued 11 minors Tuesday working at a sugar cane farm reportedly under abusive conditions, police said. They were aged 13 to 17 and authorities are investigating whether they had been abducted and administered drugs by a criminal gang to keep them docile and working at the farm in central Morelos state. A 69-year man who said he was a foreman at the farm was arrested, a statement from the Interior Ministry said.

Gunmen kill 4 at bar in central Mexico

Mexico City, Feb 9 (EFE).- Four patrons between the ages of 19 and 29 were gunned down early Sunday at a bar in Cuernavaca, a city in the central Mexican state of Morelos, officials said. The victims were three men, ages 29, 23 and 19, and a 19-year-old woman, the Morelos Attorney General's Office said in a statement. The shooting occurred at the Dreas karaoke bar in Cuernavaca, which is 85 kilometers (about 53 miles) south of Mexico City, the AG's office said. The coroner's office removed the bodies from the crime scene around 5:00 a.m., the AG's office said.

All-female police investigative unit created in Mexico

Mexico City, Jan 25 (EFE).- The government of the central Mexican state of Morelos has unveiled an all-female police investigative unit created to probe crimes against women. Morelos Gov. Graco Ramirez swore in and presented the 26 members of the unit, which is made up of women trained to investigate and solve crimes on the basis of forensic evidence, during a ceremony on Friday. He said the creation of the unit was part of his administration's overall commitment to gender equality in its public policy decision-making.

6 Bodies found in central Mexico

Mexico City, Dec 12 (EFE).- Six bodies were found in a clandestine grave near the central Mexican town of Amacuzac, the Morelos state Attorney General's Office said. The victims were described as six males ranging in age from 30 to 65. Authorities are working to identify the bodies, establish the individual causes of death and determine how long ago the bodies were buried, the AG's office said in a statement. Area ranchers stumbled onto the clandestine grave on Monday while searching for lost livestock.

Mexico's teen hitman released from reformatory, headed to U.S.

Mexico City, Nov 26 (EFE).- The teenager arrested in the Mexican state of Morelos in 2010 for belonging to the Pacifico Sur drug cartel and participating in several murders was released from a reformatory Tuesday after completing his sentence and is being deported to the United States, officials said. Edgar Jimenez Lugo, a 17-year-old known as "El Ponchis" (The Cloak), was released in the early morning hours and "is being transferred to the United States, his country of origin," Morelos Government Secretary Jorge Messeguer said.

Another suspect detained in Mexico missing-persons case

Mexico City, Aug 2 (EFE).- Mexican police have arrested a second suspect in the disappearance of seven people on July 6 in the central state of Morelos, state prosecutors said. Thursday's arrest was made in a joint federal and state police operation, according to the Morelos Attorney General's Office, which last Saturday located the house in the town of Oaxtepec where the seven residents of the Mexico City borough of Iztacalco had arrived and where the first suspect was detained.

10 Kids kidnapped at Mexican kindergarten, but found hours later

Mexico City, Jul 2 (EFE).- Ten children were "abducted" from a kindergarten in the central Mexican state of Morelos, but they were freed a few hours later and are "in good health," Gov. Graco Ramirez said Tuesday. "The children have been found" and are "in good health," the governor, who belongs to the leftist Party of the Democratic Revolution, or PRD, said in a message on Twitter. "We already have people arrested," Ramirez said, adding that the kidnapping of the children was a "criminal provocation" to which the authorities would not submit.

Thousands protest against crime in Mexico

Mexico City, Jul 1 (EFE).- Thousands of people took to the streets of Cuernavaca, the capital of Mexico's Morelos state, over the weekend to protest against the wave of violence in the region, officials said. A Morelos state government spokesman told Efe that about 2,000 people turned out for Sunday's silent march, while various media outlets pegged the demonstrators at 5,000 in Cuernavaca, a city about 85 kilometers (52 miles) south of Mexico City.

Police find 3 burned bodies in central Mexico

Mexico City, Jun 23 (EFE).- The burned bodies of two women and a man were found by police on a dirt road in the central Mexican state of Morelos, prosecutors said. The bodies were found early Saturday some 150 meters (about 490 feet) from a municipal building in the city of Huitzilac, the Morelos Attorney General's Office said. The victims were about 80 percent burned and had been gagged, the AG's office said. Another body was found in Xochitepec, a city in Morelos, media reports said, adding that the victim was shot in the head.

4 Die in shootout in central Mexico

Mexico City, Jun 6 (EFE).- Four people were killed and three others wounded in a shootout at a market in Cuernavaca, the capital of the central Mexican state of Morelos, officials said. The incident occurred after the market closed on Tuesday night, Cuernavaca Public Safety Secretary Victor Hugo Valdes told Efe. The shootout may be "associated with drug problems" because the assailants "specifically" sought out the victims and knew them, Valdes said.
