Football: Rodgers lays down gauntlet to beaten Man City

Vanquished 3-2 by Premier League leaders Liverpool at the weekend, Manchester City have an immediate opportunity to trim their title rivals' advantage when they host Sunderland on Wednesday. Liverpool's victory at a raucous Anfield on Sunday took them seven points clear of City, who have two games in hand, and two points above Chelsea, leaving them four victories from a first league title since 1990.

Newcastle in mood to banish painful Arsenal defeat

By Mike Collett LONDON (Reuters) - Exactly a year to the day since losing 7-3 at Arsenal, resurgent Newcastle United can move into the top four of the Premier League if they exact revenge for that painful defeat at St James' Park on Sunday. The Gunners head to the north-east to face Alan Pardew's in-form side as league leaders after winning 3-1 at West Ham United on Thursday.

Football: Leaders Cardiff held by Huddersfield

Cardiff missed a chance to boost their promotion charge as the Championship leaders were held to a 0-0 draw at Huddersfield on Saturday. Malky Mackay's side dropped points for only the second time in eight league games as managerless Huddersfield battled for a point at the John Smith's Stadium. The Bluebirds began the day 10 points clear at the top of the table but ran into a Huddersfield outfit, for whom joint caretaker managers Mark Lillis and Steve Eyre were taking charge of their fourth game following the sacking of Simon Grayson, who were in no mood to be rolled over.
